Your starter circuit is fairly simple. When you push the starter button, the following sequence happens normally. 1. key must be on, bar mounted shutoff switch closed(run position), the first step is to energize the compression release solenoid to lift the exhaust valves sightly and reduce the compression pressure(and the work the starter has to do-saves on battery and starter size), then the starter solenoid is energized and the starter spins. I can FAX you the wiring diagram, but you will have to pull the seat and tank to reach connections and trouble shoot it. I support the previous suggestion to get the shop and Clymer manual, a basic set of metric sockets and wrenches(the factory supplied tools would make a spark plug change difficult to say the least-seat removal would be a challenge), a test light or multimeter and the manual most problems can be solved or at least diagnosed. A test light will not give you battery voltage, only the voltage is close enough to light the light. Be sure all electrical connections are shiny clean and tight.
